La Romana Mission Outreach

La Romana Mission

Led by The First Church in Sterling since 1994, in conjunction with the Good Samaritan Mission Council and local churches, and individuals from many different towns and states, a secular mission team of approximately 20 to 30 people travels every spring from central Massachusetts to La Romana, Dominican Republic, to spend a week serving the faithful Haitian sugarcane workers and their families.

There are over 160 remote villages (called "bateyes") in the sugarcane fields in this region. The workers and their families are cut off from the rest of the world, living in desperate and impoverished conditions. They lack basic amenities such as permanent housing, clean water, electricity, education, and access to medical care.

Members of the team raise funds and collect supplies for the one-week medical mission.

For both mission team members and the sugarcane workers, the trip is a life-changing experience.
